Westwell Pelegrim NV, Kent

£33.75 inc. VAT

This ‘Champagne beating’ Kentish fizz has been in the news recently for all the right reasons. In a recent blind tasting that included the sensory expert of Plumpton College, Westwell came out top. It beat Veuve Clicquot, Lanson, Laurent Perrier and Moët en Chandon from over the water. It also topped local rivals Nyetimber and Ridgeview. Well, we could have told you this ages ago as we’ve always been fans.

The winery is based just outside Ashford in the heart of the North Downs. Pelegrim is a blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. It is aged for 18-24 months on its lees to give it extra complexity and richness. The name Pelegrim is from middle English and means Pilgrim, a nod to the Pilgrim’s Way that runs close to the vineyards.

This fizz has also made it on to Jancis Robinson’s 2020 Festive Bubbles guide –

“I came across this in a blind tasting of English sparkling wines and it was one of the few that I thought was champagne…I found it quite sophisticated and refined…good concentration and good value.”

Sophisticated, refined, good concentration and value – yes, we’re with you on that one Jancis.
