2019 Finca Constancia ‘Seleccion, VT Castilla-La Mancha

A delicious blend of no less than six grape varieties is superb value. Its make up is 35% Syrah, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, 10% Tempranillo and 2% each of Graciano and Petit Verdot. Although much of the blend is made from French varietals, the flavour of this is undeniably Spanish.

Fermented in French and American oak and then aged in the same for 13 months, there’s a quality here that betrays the modest price tag.

An intense nose of redcurrants and raspberry with hints of balsamic and pepper. The palate has great structure and richness and is incredibly smooth. There’s a soft spicy finish and real elegance here.

To get the best from this wine, decant an hour or so before serving if you can. In the essential Spanish wine guide of Penin the 2015 Finca Constancia scores 91 points which is exceptional for a wine of this price.

A bottle of this would go splendidly with haunch of venison.
