One of the finest Barbarescos produced in the stunning 2019 vintage.

Albino Rocca is one of Piemonte’s rising stars in Barbaresco production. The winery was founded in the 1960s but this Rocca family (Barbaresco also boasts the producer Bruno Rocca) had been involved in wine for many years prior to that, selling their top quality grapes to other producers. It was Albino’s son, Angelo, who started to get the winery noticed in wider circles. In the 1980s he introduced the production of Cru wines made exclusively from single vineyards and also the reintroduction of large oak casks for ageing these wines. Over the past decade the estate has stepped up another rung in terms of quality. After tasting the 2019s, Antonio Galloni of Vinous.com wrote “Readers who have not tasted these wines recently owe it to themselves to do so, as the transformation here of late towards wines of purity and finesse is significant.”

Of all Albino Rocca’s single vineyards, Vigna Ronchi is probably the best. Their winery is located at the top of the plot and it was planted over 50 years ago with some vines being over 70 years old. It has a south-east exposure with the soil consisting of limestone and clay and is rich in minerals. The wine is aged for 20 months in large (20 hectolitre) Austrian and German oak barrels. The results are stunning.
