Superb Brunello from Il Poggione and one of the wines of the vintage.

This is a perfect example of why Italian wine lovers should not ignore un-hyped vintages like 2018. There’s a wealth of winemaking talent out there and so so even tricky vintages like this can produce some outstanding wines.

There’s plenty going on here with an attractive nose of dark cherry, spice and a seductive savouriness. It has superb concentration and plenty of cherry fruit and a powerful finish. This scored a whopping 95 points with Vinous.com and was one of the highest rated Brunellos of the vintage.

And if this wasn’t enough, the estate’s Riserva Vigna Paganelli was not produced in 2018 and the fruit destined for that found a place in this impressive Brunello instead.

All this for under £50 a bottle.
