2016 Julián Madrid Rioja Reserva, Bodegas Casa Primicia

£25.50 inc. VAT

This multi award winning Rioja is refined and complex. It is one of the few permitted to use Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend.

Situated in the stunning medieval town of Laguadia, Bodegas Casa Primicia is one of the oldest wineries in Spain, dating back to the 15th century. Once owned by the church it gets its name from when it received the first 20% of local grape growers’ crop as tax (primicia translates as first offering). By the 1970s the winery was in a poor state and was rescued by a local winemaker, Julian Madrid, whose family still own the property today. It is one of the most respected Bodegas in the Rioja Alavesa sub region.

A blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon the grapes are from vines of over 50 years old. The Cabernet Sauvignon is only permitted as the vines date back to before the DOCG rules were established but need to be stated on the label as ‘other varieties’. The wine is aged for 20 months in French and American oak barrels.

An intense nose of ripe black fruit and a hint of smokiness. Luscious black cherry and blueberry on the palate with well structured tannins and a lovely long finish. A stunning Rioja that deserves its long list of awards. Gold medal winner at Mundus Vini, Bacchus and Wine Challenge Vienna.

Enjoy with some good quality roasted lamb.
