Top Notch Barbera d’Asti at Bargain Price of £8.50!

2018 Barbera d’Asti ‘Crocera’, Il Cascinone, Piemonte, Italy

“Already great value at £10.25 per bottle, at £8.50 this could well be bargain of the year.” Songbird Wines Bargain Committee

London City Bond is a huge, bonded warehouse about the size of Wembley Stadium and packed to the rafters with pretty much any drink you can think of. So, you can imagine how easy it would be for the odd pallet of wine to go ‘AWOL’ as was the case with this 2018 Barbera d’Asti, recently discovered lurking in a dark corner. As the 2019 vintage arrived some time ago, this pallet of its predecessor has been offered to me at a bargain price and I feel it’s my duty to pass the saving on to you. Many of you will already know the wine as it’s been a stalwart of the portfolio for several years but here’s a reminder of why it’s a ‘MUST BUY’.

The producer Il Cascinone must be one of Piemonte’s finest for top value wines. I have worked with them for eight years and if there’s one wine that is always a regular in my ‘everyday drinking’ wine rack then it’s this outstanding single vineyard Barbera d’Asti Superiore ‘Crocera’. Although the Barbera grape has often played second fiddle to Nebbiolo, it is now considered to a make great wine in its own right. The best vineyards surround the villages of Asti and Alba and produce perfumed reds that are ripe in juicy fruit and perfect for early drinking. The Crocera vineyard is a six-hectare site on the Monferrato hills of Piemonte, where some of the region’s finest wines are produced. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barriques (small casks) of which only 10-15% are new. The predominant use of older oak ensures that there is a more subtle flavouring to the wine and that the juicy, ripe flavours of the Barbera grape are dominant. All this evolves into the most magnificent and rewarding glass of red.

“The aroma immediately entices you with gorgeous flavours of black cherry, ripe damson and soft spice. Rich, generous and juicy on the palate with more flavours of cherry, plum and a little hint of mocha. This has an intensity and complexity that is rare to find at its regular price but at £8.50, nigh-on impossible. Drinking beautifully right now but there’s plenty of life left in this superb effort from Il Cascinone.” Songbird Wines

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
