Tio Pepe Fino En Rama 2022 Release is Here

Yes, it’s arrived – the 2022 Tio pepe Fino En Rama. It’s that time of year when you notice the trees are full of leaves, it’s Asparagus for supper again and the new release of one of the most wonderfully crisp sherries arrives in the UK. Here Songbird Wines’ ‘Guvnor’ recalls his first taste of the ground-breaking concept back in 2010:

I was contacted by my Gonzalez Byass (owners of Tio Pepe) rep at the time, who told me about this new experimental Fino that had been bottled without any fining or filtration. I had already gone through my conversion to becoming a sherry lover, so I was keen to taste this slightly bizarre concept. A sample arrived in my office a few days later and some colleagues and I set about taking a slurp. In the glass it wasn’t as clear as releases are these days but on the nose there was no denying how fresh this Fino was. It tasted delicious too. I called up my GB rep to request a few cases and was greeted with the response of “Sorry mate, I can give you a case of six and that’s it. We’ve hardly any left.” This being an ‘experiment’, they had no idea what the response would be so had only made a few thousand bottles. Oh well, that had to do, and six very lucky customers received a bottle that year.

Tasting the 2011 release for the first time was even more memorable as it was in Jerez itself and during the legendary Feria del Cabollo, an annual horse festival which is one of the hottest tickets in Spain. A small group of us visited the Tio Pepe Bodega and enjoyed an excellent tour that ended with us being some of the first to taste the 2011 En Rama. This release was more attractive visually with a clearer look to it, and the aroma was super-fresh and vibrant. That evening was then spent touring the various casetas (stalls/marquees) around the fairground, many offering an array of Andalucian entertainment and an eternal supply of Tio Pepe. What a night…

What gives Tio Pepe Fino En Rama its vibrant freshness? It is bottled straight from the cask and, just like that first experiment back in 2010, goes through no fining or filtration. Bottling usually only occurs the month before release so what you get is a super-fresh, super-charged flavour that’s bursting with youthful energy. It’s as close to tasting Fino straight from the cask as you can get.

Fast forward to 2022 and we have the 22nd release of Tio Pepe En Rama. Every year this wine offers something different, not only in terms of flavour but also appearance, as each release has its own unique label that’s based on a design from the Tio Pepe archive.

This year the blend is from 96 small casks, especially selected to represent the excellence and uniqueness of the region, with each one having its own individual ecosystem.

How does it taste? Here’s what Antonio Flores, Tio Pepe’s award-winning master blender says –Pale yellow with golden glints. Slightly cloudy as it contains flor in suspension, reflecting it’s having been bottled ‘En Rama’. Complex aromas of almonds, lemon and floral notes combined with sea spray and minerals. The palate is concentrated and sightly creamy with a salty tang and impressive depth of flavour boasting toasted almonds, apple skins and bready undertones. The finish is rounded and alluring, clearly harking back to its origins in the albariza soil yet also reflecting the Significance of its biological ageing. This wine is the purest definition of the vines and the winery.”

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
