2023 Pinot Grigo, Ponte del Diavolo, Friuli

£13.75 inc. VAT

A sophisticated Pinot Grigio that has more weight than cheaper examples of this variety but with a similarly quaffable character

This wine is named after the medieval Ponte del Diavolo bridge in Cividale which according to legend, was built by the devil in return for the first soul from the town to cross. The story goes that the cunning citizens sent a dog or a cat across, depending on the variation of the story, thereby saving themselves and gaining a wonderful bridge.

The Pinot Grigio grapes for this wine are grown in vineyards in Grave del Friuli, which is located in the southern part of Friuli. The vines are grown on alluvial plains with stony soils that have a high limestone content. A wet winter, a mild and sunny spring and plentiful sunshine during the summer meant the 2019 vintage yielded excellent quality grapes with good concentration of flavour and refreshing acidity.

At the winery, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented in stainless-steel tanks at cooler temperature to preserve the perfume and bright fruit favours of Pinot Grigio. There are lively and elegant characteristics of ripe pear, almonds and a hint of sherbet that gives this the balanced, characteristic freshness of wines from Fruili.
