2021 Rippa Dorii Salomón, Ribera del Duero

Superb single vineyard Ribera del Duero that gives plenty of bang for buck.

Rippa Dorii is a winery owned by Rioja producer Bodegas Ontanon since the 1980s. Solomon is a 4 hectare single vineyard of 40 year old vines. The soil is mainly limestone soil and sits at a very high altitude of 900m.

All grapes are hand picked and fermentation occurs in stainless steel vats and the grapes are cooled to 10 degrees. Long slow fermentation  of 19 days. Wine is then transferred to Iberian oak casks (made from Pyrenean oak), first malolactic fermentation and then ageing for 10-11 months.

A wine of serious structure and concentration, it has enticing aromas of ripe black fruit, black olive tapenade, tobacco and spice. This complexity continues on the palate with blackberry, cassis and balsamic notes. The oak is beautifully integrated giving ripe tannins balanced by juicy acidity and good length. Although this is drinking beautifully now it has the structure to be cellared for many years.
