2020 La Serra Blanc, Herència Altés, Terra Alta

A totally brilliant glass of white wine produced from vines of over 115 years old!

La Serra Blanc is jaw droppingly good. It’s made from 100% Garnacha Blanca grapes from a single vineyard of vines planted in the early 20th century. Soils are sandy clay and limestone and altitude is around 450m. The grapes are hand harvested (of course) and then fermented in concrete tanks, after which the wine spends 3 months on its lees. After this time it is transferred to 2,500 litre Austrian Foudres (large oak casks) and aged for 17 months. The results are spectacular.

The nose is incredibly inviting with toasty hazelnut, white peach and blossom. It gets even better when you taste it with so much rich intensity but so well balanced with fresh acidity. The finish lingers for what seems an eternity. This is one of the best Spanish white wines under £40 for sure. Only 2,000 bottles produced.

Herència Altés came in to being in 2010 when Núria Altés bought grapes from her father to make her first wine. In  2013 she invested in her own small winery and acquired her first vineyard (La Serra) and the brand Herència Altés was born. They now cultivate over 60 hectares of vines and all are farmed organically.
