2016 Brunello di Montalcino, Castello Romitorio, Tuscany (case of 6 IB)

£260.75

Stunning Brunello and one of the finest produced in the much acclaimed 2016 vintage. This is priced under bond (excluding duty & VAT).

Castello Romitorio is an estate that blends wine with art. The castle’s foundations date back to the Roman times but its incarnation as a wine producer began in 1984 when the property was bought as a ruin by artist Sandro Chia. As well as the Castle, Chia took over the vineyards and winemaking on the estate was revived.

In 2005 Sandro’s son, Filippo Chia, joined the company and started a process of profound renewal of the wines and winemaking style, betting on extremely elegant single varietal Sangiovese to embody the characteristics of the terroir. Since then the winery has established itself as one of the finest producers of Brunello di Montalcino and the 2016 was truly exceptional as this pair of reviews will show –

95 points, “The Castello Romitorio 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is a classic expression of the vintage, showing lots of ripe fruit, crushed mineral, herbal nuances and varietal-driven purity. This wine nails that sweet spot between elegance and power that is not easily achieved. It offers an expanded array of Sangiovese flavors with wild cherry, forest floor, crushed clove and medicinal herb, but it also shows plump density and a velvety texture. ” – Wine Advocate

95 points, “Dark, brooding and geared for the cellar, the 2016 Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino takes its time opening up in the glass, yet patience is rewarded, as a mix of blackberry and cherry further blossoms, adding crushed stone minerality with hints of sage, lavender and violets.” – Vinous

One of the most intense and complex wines of the vintage, availability of this wine is very limited.
