Domaine Evremond Classic Cuvée

Domaine Evremond Special Cuvée NV
‘An impressive and elegant debut.’
93 points – Vinous.com

Here begins an exciting new chapter of English Sparkling Wine, the release of Domaine Evremond Special Cuvée Edition 1, the joint venture of Champagne House Taittinger and their UK Agents Hatch Mansfield.  This is a Kentish Sparkling Wine due to take the world by storm and has already won a favourable review from Vinous.com.

Domaine Evremond

The Domaine takes its name from Frenchman, poet and all round epicurean Charles de Saint-Évremond. Born in 1603 and living to the ripe old age of 89, Charles was the first true Ambassador for Champagne, fuelling its popularity in the UK at the court of Charles II. He became great friends with the King, making London his home and is buried in Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey.

The estate totals 125 hectares with 60 hectares of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vines currently planted. There are plans for another 10 hectares to be planted this year.

The terroir of the vineyards seems perfect for producing sparkling wine in the current UK climate – free draining chalk based soils with a touch of flint, southern facing slopes and an ideal altitude of 50-90 metres.

Domaine Evremond Classic Cuvée:  What the critics say

So far the acclaim on this Kentish Sparkling wine has been unanimous. As mentioned above, Anne Krebiehl MW of Vinous.com is a fan, saying:

“The NV Brut Classic Cuvée Edition I is the inaugural release of Champagne Taittinger’s English sparkling wine project founded in 2014, made from vines planted in 2017 in chalk and flint soils in Kent. It is based on the 2020 vintage with around 25% of reserve wines dating to the tiny first vintage of 2018 and the first proper vintage in 2019, all fermented and aged in stainless steel only, undergoing full malolactic conversion. The wine is a blend (…) reflecting the current plantings at the 69-hectare estate. A citric, bright lemon and green apple freshness defines the lively nose of the wine. More air allows lemony Viennoiserie to peep through, as well as an ozone breeze. Fine, creamy bubbles immediately distinguish the slender palate, where more lemon freshness is bedded in the smoothness of that exemplary mousse. An impressive and elegant debut, svelte and clean-cut, especially considering the Pinot Noir dominance of the wine. Châpeau.”

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
