2021 Vallone Versante Primitivo, IGT Salento

Original price was: £11.25.Current price is: £8.70. inc. VAT

Here’s a seriously good Primitivo from Pulglia.

Agricole Vallone was founded in 1935 and is one of the original quality producers on the Salento peninsula. It is owned and run by sisters Vittoria and Maria Teresa Vallone who are the granddaughters of the winery’s founder. They are supported by winemaker Dr. Graziana Grassini, a consultant who works with some of the most prestigious family-owned wineries in Italy. They produce wines at various price points but it is this hugely enjoyable and modestly priced Primitivo that has got us Songbirds excited as it’s exceptional quality for the money.

The grapes are sourced from a single vineyard with clay/limestone soil. It’s matured for three months in concrete tanks so there’s no oak here, just deliciously pure fruit.

How good is this? Ripe aromas of red and black cherry with a touch of spiced plum. On the palate it’s incredibly juicy but the fruit flavour is kept well in check by the bright freshness of the wine.  Some wines from this region can be a little over sweet due to the heat and high sugar levels of the grapes but this is spot on despite having a relatively low alcohol level (13.5%) for a southern Italian red.

A proper quaffer that will flow into the night at any later summer barbecue.
