2021 The Chocolate Block, Boekenhoutskloof, Franschhoek

Original price was: £24.25.Current price is: £21.95. inc. VAT

The Chocolate Block is the iconic wine of the Boekenhoutskloof (try saying that after a couple of glasses) winery that was set up by winemaker Marc Kent in Franschoek, a small town in the Western Cape in the 1990s. The first vintage of The Chocolate Block was produced in 2002 with just 15 barrels released in 2003 to much acclaim. The style of the wine has been described as Rhône meets Bordeaux due to the blend of grapes used. It is one of the UKs most googled wines and demand for the wine is huge. It’s savoury richness and opulent style has always been a hit with wine lovers but recent vintages have shown an extra finesse to the wine. Boekenhoutskloof have just been awarded SA winery of the year in the Platters Guide and are the first winery to win it for a second time.

The 2019 vintage was dry with excellent picking conditions. The vintage was particularly good for the predominant varieties Syrah and Grenache with the latter revealing a perfume of ‘Châteauneuf-du-Pape like’ charm. Only the Cabernet Sauvignon was aged in new French barriques with all other varieties seeing their pre-bottling time in large old oak barrels (foudres), giving a minimal influence of new oak.

“The dark fruit character of the nose follows through onto an exceptionally complex, juicy palate with gentle nuances of ripe plums, violets, black olives, cloves and liquorice.” The Boekenhoutskloof Winery
