2020 Mercurey Blanc ‘Clos Rochette’ Monopole, Domaine Faiveley, Burgundy

£32.50 inc. VAT

Looking for that classic white Burgundy toasty aroma, fresh minerality and nutty finish but don’t want to pay through the nose? Then look no further than this wonderful Mercurey from Domaine Faiveley.

A love of wine has been passed on from one Faiveley generation to the next for more than 180 years. The Domaine has always remained in the same family and today Erwan and Eve, the 7th generation of the Faiveley family, are at the helm and are keen to respect the traditions and savoir-faire of the family while looking to the future.

The grapes are from a single vineyard, Clos Rochette, which has been owned by the family since 1993. They and are harvested and sorted by hand. The alcoholic fermentation lasts 4 weeks and takes place for a proportion of the musts (55%) in French oak barrels, 25% of which are new oak. The ageing period lasts 16 months with regular stirring whilst the rest of the blend is aged in vats. This allows the wine to develop delicate woody notes whilst conserving its freshness and distinctive character.

This is a wine that reveals exceptionally complex aromas and a fresh nose offering white flowers and spices. The lively attack gives way to a smooth, oily palate thanks to its oak ageing. The flavours and aromas combine harmoniously resulting in a beautifully elegant wine.

I’d call this a bit of a Meursault doppelgänger!
