2020 ‘Lucean Le Stelle’ Vermentino di Sardegna, Antichi Poderi Jerzu, Sardinia

£18.25 inc. VAT

Super luscious Vermentino di Sardegna from one of the island’s finest co-operatives.

Antichi Poderi Jerzu is based in the small village of Jerzu in the historical Ogliastra region on the east coast of Sardinia. The co-operative was founded in 1950 by the village doctor, Josto Miglior, who convinced 45 grape growers to join forces and produce better wine. Today, Jerzu unites 430 growers from almost all of the families in the village, and is led by head winemaker Biagio Boi and consultant winemaker Franco Bernabei. Their 650 hectares of vineyards are located in prime hillside areas stretching from the Gennargentu mountains in the heart of the island to the coast.

Grapes for this wine come from vineyards located in the hills overlooking the sea in the Ogliastra region, at 250 metres above sea level. The proximity to the sea moderates temperatures, creating an ideal physiological environment for the vines and slowing the ripening process – resulting in higher levels of acidity and great concentration of flavour in the grapes. Soils are granite, upon which Vermentino thrives. The vines are 30 years old on average and they are Guyot trained.

The wine was kept in stainless-steel tanks and was aged on its fine lees until the beginning of winter before bottling.

A really classy Vermentino that is straw yellow in the glass and opens with a delicate but persistent nose with citrus fruit aromas and hints of fennel. On the palate, the wine is balanced and well-structured with a refreshing acidity which carries the aromas onto the crisp finish.

Lovely to sip whilst you wait for a bowl of lovingly prepared, fresh seafood pasta; a dish this wine complements beautifully.
