2020 Les Maros, Le Clos du Serres, Terrasses du Larzac, Languedoc

£23.25 inc. VAT

Layers of pure red fruit make this a truly memorable wine.

Terrasses du Larzac is a rising star of the Languedoc with a number wineries offering elegance over power.  Le Clos du Serres is a 15 hectare Domaine situated 45 miles north west of Montpellier and over looked by the 849 foot high Mont Baudille. This special geographical location, where north and southern weather patterns meet, gives a particular micro-climate that ensures the wines produced here have a fresh finesse. There can be about 20C difference in temperature here which creates a much slower growing season and allows the grapes to gain more complexity.

Soil type is also crucial and the estate boasts 15 different parcels of vines, each with their individual make up that includes schist, sandstone, pebble, shingle and red ruffes. Les Maros is a ‘Leiu-Dit’ (small defined area/vineyard) and is the Domaine’s coolest vineyard. The soil here is schist and the vines planted are Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan and Mourvédre with the former making up 60% of the blend of this vintage. Each variety is vinified separately and then aged for 12 months in concrete tanks which enables the fresh and complex fruit character to shine through.

The soft elegance of the Grenache shows through with ripe flavours of blackcurrant, cherry and blackberry. Time in the glass gives the wine more complexity and aromas of chocolate and liquorice. A seriously good wine that delicious now but will age beautifully.
