2019 Morgon ‘Les Charmes’, Domaine de Laithevalle, Beaujolais

£18.50 inc. VAT

A gorgeous, fruit driven but muscular Gamay from the heart of the Beaujolais region.

The Cru of Morgon is bang in the centre of Beaujolais and the reds produced here are usually fuller in body that many of the other Crus. It is home to some of the region’s finest Lieux Dits (single vineyards) – Côte de Py and Les Charmes -and it is the latter, which also happens to be the highest elevated, where Domaine de Laithevalle is situated. Les Charmes is know for its ancient, decomposing volcanic soils which is kn0wn locally as roche pourrie (rotten rock).

The Domaine owns a 10 hectare vineyard of 35-60 year old vines and are south east facing. The vines are hand harvested and then go through further selection at the winery to ensure only the top quality fruit is used. Fermentation occurs naturally in concrete tanks using wild yeasts and the wine is then aged for a further six months before bottling.

This is a wine that has concentration and complexity that betrays is modest price tag. There is opulent aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant and a little star anise. The palate has a wonderful balance of structure and silkiness along with soft tannins. It will age beautifully for at least five years.

If you are a lover of the Gamay then get some quick whilst it remains at this crazy offer price. If you have yet to be charmed by Burgundy’s ‘other red grape’ then I suggest you begin here.
