2019 Laurel, Clos I Terrasses, Priorat, Catalunya

£44.75 inc. VAT

A beautifully crafted Priorat with an emphasis on freshness and elegance.

Clos I Terrasses was born in 1989, when current Priorat legends Alvaro Palacios and Rene Barbier persuaded their friend Daphne Glorian to do something crazy: spend all her savings on some old Garnacha vines planted on 17 terraces of hillside vines, just outside the village of Gratallops. The wines have gone from strength to strength and her top wine, Clos Erasmus, is one of the finest in the appellation.

Laurel is a blend of Garnacha, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from three small vineyards within the Gratallops sub region. It is made from younger vines (10-27 years old) and occasionally has a declassified barrel of the top wine (Clos Erasmus) added to the mix. Fermented in a mixture of large wooden and concrete vats it is then matured in these along with with used 228 litre barrels.

Although young this 2019 is already showing its credentials as a serious glass of Priorat. There is a vivid intensity on the nose with red cherry, raspberry and a hint of Juniper. The palate is super silky with the ripe fruit blending beautifully with the ripe tannins. The mineral finish finishes things off nicely. A perfect example of a modern Priorat red.
