2019 Catalan Eagle Garnacha Red, La Báscula, Terra Alta Organic

£12.50 inc. VAT

Here’s one for the Priorat and Rhône fans. It is produced just outside the hallowed area of the former and also has a similar blend of  old vine Garnacha, Cariñena and Syrah. The soil is limestone and clay as opposed to granite so it hasn’t the mineral perfume of a Priorat but sits between that and a really good Côtes du Rhône in style. A little bit of oak aging does the job nicely and the result is a ripe and juicy red with brambly fruit and a nice touch of vanilla spice. Add to this that this won gold at the Wines of Spain awards then you really have a bargain at the £8.95 offer price.

Sourced from Pepe Fuster’s 26ha vineyard in Terra Alta, near Tarragona. The vineyard is organically certified – with stoney limestone and clay soil, and vines grown at 500-600m altitude. Two month’s contact with oak staves gives a touch of vanilla and added complexity.

Weighty with sweet ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit and warm vanilla oak spice. The oak contact gives this wine a new world feel whilst remaining firmly and typically Spanish from the character of old-vine Grenache and Carinena.

Great with a chorizo and bean stew.
