2018 Hacienda Monasterio Cosecha, Ribera del Duero

£55.75 inc. VAT

One of Ribera del Duero’s finest estates, Hacienda Monasterio has fine pedigree indeed and this ‘entry level’ red is the first step to their wine-making brilliance.

The winemaker is no other than Peter Sisseck of the Ribera cult winery Dominio de Pingus, who knows a thing or two about 100 point wines. The vineyards were planted in the late 1980s using cuttings from the region’s greatest property, Vega Sicilia. These are situated between Pesquera and Valbuena del Duero, two towns famous for the quality of their wines. The density of vines here is high but yields are incredibly low (20 hl/ha) so the quality and intensity of flavour of the grapes is outstanding. The grapes are harvested organically and no chemicals or pesticides are used.

The blend is 78% Tinto Fino (a smaller clone of Tempranillo) and 22% Cabernet Sauvignon. After fermentation and maceration in temperature controlled stainless steel vats the wine is aged in a mixture of new and two year old French oak for around 18 months.

Intense ruby red in colour this has a superb mineral nose with red fruit flavours of cherry and strawberry. Structured on the palate with ripe tannins and a complexity of mineral and fruit notes. Delightfully fresh on the finish this wine has many years of life ahead of it.

A classic Spanish stew or grilled meats would work best with this wine.
