2018 Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée de Pressoniers Domaine Joseph Roty, Burgundy

£32.75 inc. VAT

Gevrey Chambertin? Well not quite but it’s closest you’ll get at this price.

The Côte Chalonnaise can offer great value from appellations like Mercurey and Givry, however it’s the wines from the Côte de Nuits that fill  most excitement and no more so than the iconic Gevrey-Chambertin. This village boasts nine Grand Crus (more than any other in Burgundy) and a wealth of land with excellent vineyard soil. Its size and prestige, and possibly also its historic connections with Napoleon Bonaparte, make it the name that immediately springs to mind when one thinks of great red Burgundy. However these days it’s hard to find a decent one much less than £40 and that’s why the 2018 Bourgogne Rouge ‘Cuvée de Pressonnier’ by Domaine Joseph Roty caught our eye….

Domaine Joseph Roty was founded in the 1960s, although the Roty family has been making wine in the region since the 18th century. They own some of the largest concentrations of old vines in France and their Grand Crus are snapped up every vintage. The ‘Cuvée de Pressonnier’ is made of up various parcels of old vines (the youngest being 35 years old!) the majority of which are from vineyards that were classed as Gevrey-Chambertin until the boundary was moved in 1964. On paper this looks like one of the best bargains in Burgundy and we’re delighted to say that when tasted it proves it is.  It is muscular with superb concentration and lovely richness of fruit. To us it drinks just like Gevrey-Chambertin because, theoretically, that’s what it is. This is a gem of a wine for fans of quality red Burgundy.

“A ripe and concentrated aroma of black cherry and cassis makes you dare to hope that the taste will be equally as opulent. No disappointments here as I found the rich and muscular structure absolutely wonderful. There’s plenty of the cherry fruit on the palate and a smoky spiciness too. Yes it’s young, but I’d happily drink this any day over a mediocre mature Burgundy.”

Roty’s wines have a reputation for longevity and this wine has the capacity to age 15 years past vintage but I can’t see it lasting that long in many cellars.
