2015 Châteauneuf du Pape, Cuvée Reservée, Domaine du Pegau, Rhône

£65.75 inc. VAT

The flagship of the Domaine du Pegau, the Cuvée Réservée, is one of the most sought after Châteauneuf-du-Papes. It is a blend of 13 grape varieties, mainly Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre and reveals the typical characteristics of the famed Châteauneuf-du-Pape soils of pebbles, clay and limestone mixture tends to iron and sand.

All harvesting is done by hand and there is no destemming prior to fermentation which happens spontaneously from natural yeasts. Maceration is for 12 days in concrete tank and the wine is aged for two years in old 50hl oak casks.
This is a sublime wine with flavours of black ripe fruits, Morello cherry, raspberries, juniper berries, black pepper and garrigue. After time in the glass aromas become more plums, dried stone fruits and leather. It is round, rich, powerful with soft tannins and a complex, spicy finish.
It gets a superb note from The Wine Advocate –
“Now that it has been in bottle a while, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is looking even better than I projected based on last year’s prebottling sample. It’s all violets, cherries, subtle allspice and clove and traditional garrigue notes of lavender and thyme. Full-bodied and rich, it’s crazy complex, adding hints of tar and black olives on the long, silky finish. It should evolve beautifully over the next two decades.” 96 points, Wine Advocate
