2015 Barolo Borgogno, Piemonte, Italy

Superb old school Barolo produced from grapes sourced from some of the region’s most prestigious vineyards.

Established in 1761, by Bartolomeo Borgogno, this estate was one of the first producers in the area; however, it was in 1920 when Cesare Borgogno took over management that the winery’s direction and destination was really changed forever. Cesare started to export his wines but also had the vision to keep aside at least half of the production, with the idea of releasing it after a minimum of 20 years ageing. Due to this decision, Borgogno has an unprecedented collection of older vintages held back in their cellar.

In respect of the Earth, Borgogno does not use chemical fertilizers or herbicides in conjunction with sustainable treatments. They began their conversion process to organic farming in 2016 and intend to be Certified Organic in the very near future.

The wine is aged for 4 years in Slavonian oak casks (4500L) with a further refining in bottle for 6 months. The Barolo is made from grapes coming from five of the most prestigious vineyards of the Barolo area: Cannubi, Cannubi San Lorenzo, Fossati, Liste, San Pietro delle Viole.

Garnet hue, the nose revealing a youthful and tightly coiled but nevertheless inviting wine. Dark cool fruits with liquorice, bitter herbs and spice are backed by assertive tannins and a vibrant acidity. Will definitely sit happily in the cellar for a few years, but offers plenty of pleasure to the drinker now.
