2013 Sarget de Gruaud Larose, St. Julien, Bordeaux

Original price was: £32.75.Current price is: £27.70. inc. VAT

In vintages like 2013 there is outstanding value to be found by the canny buyer in the second wines of the top Bordeaux Châteaux.

Château Gruaud Larose is a second growth (2me Cru) from the left bank of Bordeaux. It is situated in the commune of St. Julien and regularly offers one of the best buys of a Bordeaux vintage as it is exceptional value compared to its expensive neighbours, Châteaux Ducru-Beaucaillou and Leoville Las Cases both of which are also 2me Crus.

2013 was a very difficult vintage for Bordeaux however the talented winemakers of the best crus knew what they were doing and there was some delicious wine made for early drinking. Château Gruaud Larose produced only 4,000 cases in 2013 compared to a usual production of 12,000. So what happened to the surplus grapes grown in the estate’s finest vineyards?  They were used as part of the blend of the Château’s second wine, Sarget de Gruaud Larose and the result is a claret that’s totally under-priced considering the proportion of top quality fruit used in the blend.

57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec. What a wonderful surprise the 2013 Sarget is as it offers a ripe and powerful nose of cassis, blackberries, dark chocolate and cedar wood. Full on the palate with dark berry fruit, a touch of cherry and some nice freshness too – this wine is at its best but the freshness will keep it alive for some time. Tannins are silky and not harsh at all so you could almost drink this on its own. Bravo!
