2013 Caiarossa, Rosso di Toscana, Tuscany

This ‘Who’s Who’ of grape varieties is one of Tuscany’s undiscovered gems.

Caiarossa is situated in Val di Cecina, which lies just to the north of Bolgheri. The winery was founded in 1998 and in 2004 the estate was acquired by Eric Albada Jelgersma, owner of Châteaux Giscours and du Tertre in Margaux.

The blend here is Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Alicante and even though the majority are non-indigenous varieties, there is something unmistakably Tuscan about it. It has a wonderful aroma of ripe black cherry and exotic spice and superb concentration. This is a wine that’s just reaching its peak and will drink beautifully over the next five years.

“This is a gorgeous blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Alicante. The 2013 Caiarossa struts its stuff with a soft, velvety mouthfeel and beautiful aromatic intensity. This vintage is complete and generous on all fronts. The bouquet opens slowly and seductively with dark fruit and dried cherry. Those primary aromas segue to spice, smoked cedar and bitter chocolate. You don’t get a clear sense of any one variety, but this blend of seven grapes offers power, structure, intensity and textural richness nonetheless.
