2009 Castillo Ygay Rioja Gran Reserva, Marqués de Murrieta

£125.75 inc. VAT

Established in 1852, Murrieta is one of the oldest and most respected bodegas in Rioja Alta. Their wines are concentrated and long-lived and some, like “Castillo Ygay”, have become legendary amongst wine-lovers.

An old single vineyard called La Plana located at 485 metres altitude within the 300 hectare Ygay estate surrounding the winery in the southern point of Rioja Alta wine area. It is exclusively used for this gran reserva wine only, and only in the most excellent quality vintages. The blend is 81% Tempranillo and 19% Mazuelo.  It is aged for 28 months in 225 litre American oak barrels, with at least 10 months in new oak, and 36 months in bottle before release.

The plaudits have been universal in their praise for the 2009 vintage.

“Rich yet energetic in style, displaying superb finishing clarity, even tannins and a lingering spice-cake note.” 94 points, Vinous

“Black cherry, plum, clove, cocoa and mineral flavors are rich and harmonious in this polished red.” 94 points, Wine Spectator

“This is a great classical Rioja for the long haul. The prices are increasing but so is the quality.” 96 points, Wine Advocate

This gorgeous Rioja has soft and elegant fruit but with a backbone of hidden power. The spicy finishes lingers in the palate for a long time. After an hour open the wine is really drinking beautifully.
