2001 Chateau Pontet-Canet, Pauillac, Bordeaux

£110.75 inc. VAT

Absolutely stonking bottle of Claret here from the wonderful Chateau Pontet-Canet. Ask any lover of ‘proper’ Bordeaux for the their favourite drinking vintage and most will say 2001. Hot on the heels of the much lauded but Parker-fied 2000s, 2001 was a vintage not only for the wise but for the drinker rather than the investor.

Although Pontet-Canet was classified a 5th Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification it now regularly produces wine to rival 2nd Growths and occasionally even 1st Growths.

The story of modern day Pontet-Canet began in 1994 when Alfred Tesseron took over the running of the estate and quality has improved every year since then.

Although it has been drinking well over the last few years 2001 Chateau Pontet-Canet seems to be hitting a purple patch. Pronounced and vibrant this is showing delicious blackcurrant, blueberry, black cherry, liquorice with touches of clove and tobacco. Excellent, finesse and structure. This doesn’t have the power of the 2000 but who wants ‘power’ from Bordeaux? Not me, I want elegance and complexity and this is what I got from this marvellous wine. If you’re going to spend £100 on a bottle of wine you won’t find many better than this!
