2022 Samas (Vermentino/Chardonnay), Agricola Punica, Sardinia

£19.00 inc. VAT

A superb example of Vermentino blended with a little Chardonnay to make a stunning glass of refreshing white wine from the sandy soils of Sardinia.

This is a joint venture between the Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Group, Sardinian winery Cantina di Santadi, Santadi’s President Antonello Pilloni and the legendary Tuscan consulting oenologist Giacomo Tachis.

Made from selected Vermentino (80%) and Chardonnay (20%) grapes it is vinified with cryo-maceration techniques to preserve the wine from oxidation. Harvesting done by hand at dawn to maintain the characteristic varietal notes of these grapes, mostly coming from vineyards with sandy soil.

The vinification is done separately for each varietal on stainless still vats. On a second stage, the Vermentino and Chardonnay wines are blended together; this blend will then rest on small concrete vats for about 3 months to complete the maturation and a natural stabilization of Samas, which is not filtered nor clarified.

Vivid yellow straw colour with soft greenish hints and a wonderful bouquet of tropical fruit and citrus notes with a distinguished Mediterranean flavour of herbs. On the palate this wine is silky and well balanced with good salinity and freshness notes.

It’s great with seafood, chilli squid would be my choice but enjoyed on its own on a balmy evening is a rather splendid experience too.
