2019 Neno Godello, Viña Samoza, DO Valdeorras

£19.50 inc. VAT

Valdeorras is located inland in Orense along the banks of the river Sil, between the Trevinca, Montouto and Manzaneda mountains. Neno is their regional wine, grapes come from a selection of parcels on a variety of aspects, elevations and soil types including slate in the higher vineyards, granite, “xábregos” sandy soils on the hillsides and alluvial soils further down the valley. Vines are between 30 and 40 years old. The indigenous Godello grape was almost wiped out by phylloxera but is now being replanted in the region.

Viña Somoza was founded in 2001, but it was in 2017 when they employed Javier García from 4 Monos, that the project took an exciting new course. Javi has been brought in to maximise the potential of these outstanding vineyards, conversion to organics is well under way and a scheme to bring back to life historic vineyard sites is in the pipeline.

Grapes are hand sorted and cold soaked for 12-48 hours when they arrive at the winery. The grapes are then pressed, and the must is cool fermented in a selection of stainless steel, concrete and old barrels. The wine then stays on fine
lees for seven months with some bâtonnage before bottling after a light fining with bentonite.

Shy on the nose to begin with but opens out with a bit of aeration. Combines rich, textured green apple and pear on the nose with a floral palate, refreshing acidity and minerality.

Been enjoying this with the local Asparagus (when in season) but super with light seafood dishes.
