2020 Beneventano Aglianico, Vesevo, Campania, Italy

£13.50 inc. VAT

The name Vesevo is the historic name for Vesuvius. The vineyards are located in the Irpinian hills of Campania, potentially one of Italy’s most exciting wine producing areas. Despite being so far south, there are large differences here between day and night temperatures, making this one of the latest regions in Italy to harvest.

The Vesevo vineyards are situated between 450 and 550 metres above sea level, and are always subject to the cool breeze blowing off the Bay of Naples. Over the centuries, this breeze has blown volcanic ash from Vesuvius inland to give the soil here a volcanic character.

The grapes were harvested by hand. After destemming and crushing, maceration took place. Fermentation followed and lasted 15 days at temperatures of up to 25°C. The wine was transferred into stainless-steel tanks where it remained for one month. It then aged in American oak barrels for six months prior to bottling.

This wine is ruby red in colour, with a complex and intense nose of red cherries, raspberries and cranberries, which continue through onto the palate. The wine has firm yet smooth tannins with a lingering spicy finish and hints of vanilla.
