Below is a plea to wine drinkers to help out all independent wine merchants during this time.

Dear Wine Lover,

As we enter a period of self-isolation or socialising indoors, I imagine all wine drinkers are stocking up for the weeks ahead. The independent wine merchant has always been a great asset to the UK wine market offering a huge diversity of product and the consumer a chance to taste exciting wines from small producers. Like many other industries we are facing a huge challenge from the Covid-19 outbreak but YOU can make a difference here. Please check if you have a local independent merchant offering a home delivery service and try to buy wine from these rather than the supermarkets (who are, let’s face it, coining it in at the moment).

Songbird Wines is an independent wine merchant who, alongside private customers, supplies many bars and restaurants who are currently facing their own struggle. They are now closed and are adapting their businesses around this and will pay us suppliers when they are ready. However if more wine lovers purchased all (or even some) of their wine from independents like me it will help our own suppliers (usually family owned wineries) and keep the pressure off the struggling on-trade.

We deliver to South East London and most of Kent and the current minimum order is 6 bottles and cases can be mixed. My current list can be found here https://songbirdwine.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Retail-List-March-20.pdf and wines start at £6.50. I am always happy to make recommendations. Here are some great recommendations on the value end of the list –

Whites

2018 Il Meridione Grillo, Adria Vini, DOC Sicily, Italy @ £6.75 (vegan) – Bags of character and flavour with hints of citrus & honey, nice on it’s own or with nibbles

2019 Les Oliviers Sauvignon Blanc/Vermentino, Pays d’Oc @ £7.75 – All round winner with grassiness of the Sauvignon grape blended with spicy roundness of Vermentino, enjoy with a bowl of olives or on its own

2018 Fuenteseca Macabeo/Sauvignon Blanc, Utiel-Requena, Spain @ £8.50 (vegan & organic) – fresh, zesty with wonderful vibrancy. Great with fish and chips

2019 Pinot Grigio, Vinvita, Veneto, Italy @ £8.25 (vegan) – Grown up Pinot Grigio that has excellent texture and complexity. Perfect with roasted veg and halloumi

Reds

2018 Rame Garnacha, Bordegas Borsao, Campo de Borja, Spain @ £6.75 (vegetarian) – Superb value red with ripe red fruit and hints of spice, goes nicely with hard cheeses

2018 Il Meridione Nero d’Avola, DOC Sicilia, Italy @ £6.75 (vegan) – Deep coloured and juicy with brambly fruit and a hint of dark chocolate, this is the red to go with a burger – veggie or meat

2018 Les Oliviers Merlot/Mourvédre, Pays d’Oc, France @ £7.75 – Jammy, plummy, smooth and pretty much everything else you like about red wine. Some simple nibbles is all this needs

2018 Fuenteseca Bobal/Cabernet Sauvignon, Utiel-Requena, Spain  @ £8.50 (vegan & organic) – Lovely cassis and cherry flavours with excellent structure. Enjoy this with pizza or pasta

Fizz

NV Fontessa Prosecco Spumante Brut, Adria Vini @ £7.95 (vegan) – Outstanding dry Prosecco (Brut means dry, Extra Dry is slightly sweet with Prosecco, strange huh?) from small co-operative in Northern Italy. Will knock the spots off any supermarket Prosecco at same price.

Please forward this email to all in your address book to help spread the word. If you are not in my delivery area there are dozens of companies like mine around the UK who offer great wine and service and would love to hear from you – they are just a Google away.

In the big scheme of things this may seem quite a trivial matter but if we can make a difference and save a few small businesses/livelihoods – just by drinking wine – then it must mean something.

Thank you,

Jonny Wren

I can’t believe it’s not Gavi!

This superb Cortese from Piemonte gives many a more expensive Gavi a run for their money. So what’s in a name? Gavi di Gavi is certainly one that brings to mind classy Italian white and a price tag to match. This wine isn’t a Gavi di Gavi but it’s darn close to one as it […]

Dreams are made of this old vine Garnacha from Navarra

I’d just like to bring your attention to a wine I really enjoyed over the weekend. A recent addition to the portfolio, 2018 Sea of Dreams old vine Garnacha is drinking beautifully. It has such a lovely silkiness it is like a Burgundy in texture. Sometimes Garnacha/Grenache can be pigeonholed as a powerhouse but this […]
