Glorious Godello Goes Great Guns

Raphael Palacios needs little introduction to most of you as I have been singing the praises of his delicious white wines for many years and his 2019 Louro Godello claimed the number 1 white spot in my top 10 wines under £20 of 2020. So last weekend saw the wine being recommended by Jancis Robinson MW in the FT which resulted in a flurry of orders and the wine is now sold out until my next batch arrives mid-April. Here’s what Jancis said –

“Blend of Godello grapes grown around O Bolo in several of Galicia’s typically tiny plots at elevations above 600m. Intense, dry, concentrated, sophisticated. Just the job for those who seek a reliable, sensibly priced alternative to fine white Burgundy.”

In the past she has also called Louro “the wine that out-Pulignys Puligny” (referring to the reassuringly expensive white Burgundy, Puligny-Montrachet) which I find particularly amusing but is also high praise indeed for a truly impressive wine.

Now you may be wondering why I am giving so much time to a wine that is currently out of stock? Well it’s because for the very first time I have this brilliant white wine in MAGNUM!

With impeccable timing these have arrived just as we are about to be able to share wines with friends again and what better way to prevent a case of RSI than have one of these beauties in the ice bucket on the patio? They are retailing on the website at £38.50 but I am offering them at £35 per magnum to Songbird Wines customers up until Good Friday. That’s cheaper than two single bottles of this great wine from Spain’s finest white wine producer.

2019 Louro Do Bolo Godello, Raphael Palacios, DO Valdeorras RRP £38.50 per Magnum, Offer Price £35 per Magnum

“A blend of 92% Godello and 8% Treixadura and from vines 20-40 years old. Aged for around four months on its lees in foudres (very large French oak barrels). The first thing to astound me about the 2019 was the immediate intensity of its bouquet. From the off it displayed its finesse and class.  Poised with aromas of orange blossom, nectarine and hints of banana and vanilla. Lovely and pure on the palate with stone fruit, green apple and that wonderful minerality. Ripe but elegant and totally delicious.” JW

A Fabulous French Find

As mentioned on previous correspondence I have been on a quest to expand my offering of French wine. The Rhône has been the main beneficiary of this and over the past few weeks I have immersed myself in tasting so many super wines. I don’t think there is another region that offers such a wealth of wines that offer both quality and value than here. However, it’s a wine from a region that is not always associated with value for money that has got me really excited. It’s the Joseph Faiveley Bourgogne Pinot Noir from the much heralded 2019 vintage.

A passion for wine has been passed through the Faiveley generations for over 180 years. Erwan and Eve, who are the 7th generation of the Faiveley family members, are currently at the helm and the wines have never been better. The family owns a vast number of vineyards and many are within the prestigious appellations like Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Musigny, Echézeaux and Clos Vougeot. These serious wines with hefty price tags will only be seen in the very finest restaurants or the cellars of the elite few so the Domaine understands that for the Faiveley name to reach a wider audience they need to produce excellent generic wines and this is exactly what they have done with this new release.

2019 Bourgogne Pinot Noir ‘Joseph Faiveley’, Domaine Faiveley, Burgundy @ £21.75

“If this is a sign of what the 2019 red Burgundies will be like then we are in for a treat. A very elegant perfumed nose of ripe cherry and rose petal. Nice poise and structure with soft tannins. After an hour’s air the wine really starts to open up. The cherry aromas remain with hints of sweet spice and leather coming through. It gains more weight on the palate too. Most of the fruit for this wine is sourced from Mercurey vineyards in the Côte Chalonnaise but it certainly has a Côte d’Or structure to it. Very impressive.” JW

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
