The wine tasting season is upon us

I take my New Year resolutions very seriously, especially the one about finding even more delicious wines for the wine lovers of Kent. It’s certainly tasting season for the UK wine trade with about 3 tastings happening per day over the next 4 weeks but, despite my dedication to the cause, I can’t attend them all!

Attending trade tastings can be hard work, no seriously it is – I know most of you have visions of us all standing around in our red trousers, sipping fine wine all day and catching up on gossip but that’s only during the lunch break.

There are two types of tasting that I attend – major wine tastings and tutored wine tastings – and these usually take place in London. The first is much more intense with me likely to taste over 150 wines and choose which (if any) I am going to stock. This can be a long process so one must be efficient with their time. I divide the wines I taste into levels of ticks – three ticks = excellent; two ticks = well worth considering; one tick = maybe. I then assess price/value for money to decide if they will make it on Wren Wine’s list of outstanding wines for Kent.

Tutored tastings are a less intense affair that involve tasting some sensational wines and usually hosted by the winemaker/Estate owner themselves. Sometimes the venue is some rather good restaurant and we’ll eat some delicious food with the wines and it’s on these occasions I can safely say it’s been ‘a good day at the office’!

If you’d like to organise your own tutored wine tasting in Kent or London then see here for more information on Wren Wine Tastings and Events

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
