Well it does seem like we could be in for some more seasonable weather this week, so now seems the ideal time to launch the Songbird Wines Spring Offer. We have a mixture of old favourites and new wines, but all are delicious and exceptionally priced and are sure to put a Spring in your step.

NV Blanquette de Limoux ‘Le Moulin’, Domaine J. Laurens, Languedoc, France
RRP £15.75 Offer Price £13.75

Not so much the ‘poor man’s Champagne’ but more the wise man’s Champagne. Produced in the hilly regions outside Carcassonne, the rocky limestone and clay soils work perfectly with the Mauzac Blanc and Chardonnay grapes which make up the blend. Made using the same method as Champagne this wine is bone dry with aromas of apple and honey, a fresh, zingy palate and a nutty finish. A wonderful glass of French fizz that doesn’t break the bank.

2020 Prosecco Rosé, Giocomo Montesor, Venezie, Italy
RRP £12.25 Offer Price £9.95

Yes it’s back and with over two quid off a bottle too! This sublime pink fizz was briefly available as a one-off parcel a couple of years ago and now makes a welcome return. Gentle aromas of berry and citrus give way to a palate that is lightly honeyed. Also present are red apple characters with a touch of redcurrant. Creamy bubbles and crisp acidity make this wine a treat to enjoy with or without food, but it would go exceptionally well with chicken, fish or summer salads. Warning – it’s seriously drinkable…

2020 Montesor Custoza Bio, Veneto, Italy
RRP £9.25 Offer Price £7.95

Freshness and elegance abound in this delicious new white produced from organic vineyards to the southeast of Lake Garda. A blend of some of the finest local grape varieties (Garganega, Friulano, Cortese and Trebbiano Toscano) are softly crushed and fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel. The vines are organically cultivated on hillside slopes to the South-East of Lake Garda in Veneto, a wine region that’s hugely growing in popularity.

This is a savoury wine which has delicate aromas of orchard fruit and spring flowers that support the golden apple, apricot and citrus notes on the palate. A saline acidity rounds off the finish to a wine that makes for perfect pairing with Bruschetta and Sushi.

2020 Valle Vento Gavi di Commune di Tassarolo, Piemonte, Italy
RRP £11.50 Offer Price £9.25

Bargain alert! Here’s a superb organic Gavi from one of the region’s finest vineyards, close to La Battistina. Grapes are all hand harvested and fermented in stainless steel vats and then spends a short time on its lees to add further complexity. Beautifully aromatic with scents of lime, honeysuckle and soft minerality. Take a sip and be enchanted by its vibrant and expressive texture along with its zingy freshness. The mouth-watering citrus and mineral notes continue right through the long, satisfying finish.

2020 Sa Raja Vermentino di Sardegna, Sardinia, Italy
RRP £14 Offer Price £12.50

A bright and citrusy Vermentino from one of Sardinia’s most exciting new producers. Made mainly from fruit sourced from the Gallura region (noted for producing the best quality Vermentino grapes), where quartz infused sandy soils help create a lovely mineral character. All grapes are hand-picked and the wine is aged for 6 months in tank on its lees to add further complexity. Vibrant and textural with lovely aromas of citrus, stone fruit and floral undertones. Bright, lemony flavours with excellent minerality and a light saline finish makes this a super match to seafood.

2020 Cuvée Edalise, Côtes de Provence Rosé, France
RRP £13.75 Offer Price £10.95

A gorgeous rosé in a rather eye-catching bottle is the result of many trials of varying proportions and blends, ultimately leading to this perfect example of a Provençal drop. Delightfully crisp and refreshing, as Provence rosé should be, and classic powdery pink in colour, there are notes of white peaches, redcurrants and mandarin. Some evenings you just can’t beat a chilled Provence rosé with some fresh seafood, which is its natural partner, but this will also be ideal with more robustly flavoured summer dishes too, such as a salade niçoise or a feta and spinach tart.

2020 La Baca Nerello Mascalese, IGT Terre Siciliane, Italy
RRP £8.25 Offer Price £6.95

If you’re looking for a light and juicy red for when those warmer evenings arrive, then this is probably right up your strada. Although the grapes are matured under the baking Sicilian sun, they maintain their freshness and produce a wine of excellent balance. All vinification is done in stainless steel and the result is a vibrant and youthful red with bags of cherry and plum flavours. There are some gentle tannins on the finish which will make this a perfect red for tomato-based pasta or barbecued meats. Cracking value.

2018 Chianti Riserva ‘La Scoperta’, Uggiano, Tuscany, Italy
RRP £9.75  Offer Price £8.25

Delightful ‘midweek’ Chianti made from 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo grapes grown on the warm hillsides of Tuscany. The Uggiano winery was founded in the early 1970s and is now one of the leading producers in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini zone. They make wine to suit all budgets and always deliver great value whatever the price tag. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and then aged for six months in old oak barrels. This gives the wine a mature savouriness but there is plenty of vibrant youthful dark fruit to balance this beautifully. Decent bit of spice on the finish polishes things off nicely. This is an ideal wine to enjoy on a lazy evening with a takeout pizza on the sofa but it works really well with richer dishes too.

2019 Domaine des Tourelles Vieille Vignes Cinsault, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon
RRP £17.75 Offer Price £14.95

Snap this up whilst you can at this price. It is made from vines that are over 70 years old and must be one of the best Cinsaults under £20 from anywhere in the world. There’s an elegance and finesse which is almost Burgundian. After fermentation the wine is aged for one year in concrete tanks and then for six months in French oak to smooth out the tannins. The nose is lifted and pronounced and has an exotic mix of ripe fig, bright red cherry and plum fruit with star anise spice. The palate has beautifully ripe red fruit characters alongside fig and spice notes. The acidity and tannin perfectly balances the generous flavours and leaves a pure, clean finish. Drink now or cellar it for a few years and see how it splendidly matures.

All the wines are available now so get your orders in ASAP to receive your delivery before the Easter weekend.

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
