November News & Views

So, here we go again. Another lockdown and without the prospect of longer days and better weather to look forward to – that winter warming glass of red’s going to seem even more appealing. And yes, Songbird Wines will be delivering throughout the period of restrictions as before and now across most of the UK.

Hang on a Mo

Now, as someone that takes their wine merchant status very seriously I do not get involved in the portmanteau months of Dryanuary and Stoptober. I am, however, going to do my bit by joining in with Movember. Throughout the month I’ll be growing a moustache to raise money for men’s health. Not only is this for a good cause but I’ll also be able fulfil a lifelong ambition of looking like The Beatles circa Sgt. Pepper (though The Ruttles might be more appropriate). My fundraising page is here and all donations are welcome, however you can help by just buying wine from me as I’ll be donating a percentage of this month’s turnover to the charity.

Right, now the important bit. As a sacrifice to my loyal customers I squeezed a case of samples into my Cornwall bound car last week and managed some serious drinking…I mean tasting. There were some super wines and here’s some of the highlights. This first batch are available at a discounted price as part of the Autumn/Winter Offer

2018 Catalan Eagle Red, La Bascula, Terra Alta, Catalunya (Organic) – List Price £11 Offer Price £8.95

Here’s one for the Priorat and Rhône fans. It is produced just outside the hallowed area of the former and also has a similar blend of old vine Garnacha, Cariñena and Syrah. The soil is limestone and clay as opposed to granite so it hasn’t the mineral perfume of a Priorat but sits between that and a really good Côtes du Rhône in style. A little bit of oak aging does the job nicely and the result is a ripe and juicy red with brambly fruit and a nice touch of vanilla spice. Add to this that it won gold at the Wines of Spain awards then you really have a bargain at £8.95.

2019 Messmer Pinot Blanc Weissburgunder Trocken, Pfalz, Germany – List Price £11.25 Offer Price £9.75

Now German wine has moved on quite a bit since the days of Blue Nun and Black Tower and that’s no more evident than here. This delicious Pinot Blanc has delicate aromas of lemon peel, stone fruit and a touch of white pepper and is wonderfully fresh on the palate with vibrant citrus flavours and superb minerality. Think more Italy than Germany and you’ll be closer to the style of this white.

2018 ‘Zolla’ Salice Salentino, Vigneti del Salento, Puglia – £15

Mmmm. It’s been a few years since I’ve tasted a Salice Salentino and it was great to reacquaint myself with this delight. Made from Negroamaro and Malvasia Nero this has everything you want from an Italian red – elegance, structure and power. Lovely ripe red cherry on the nose with plum and a hint of sweet spice and Mediterranean herbs. A little tight to begin with, this really opens up after half an hour in the glass and gives total pleasure from then on.

2019 ‘Costadune’ Grillo, Mandrarossa, Sicily @ £11.25

A great new discovery from Sicily. Full flavoured with aromas of citrus and a touch of basil this is as classy as it is drinkable. If you’re looking for some escapism this is the kind of white wine that transports you to balmy evenings eating barbecued fish on the Mediterranean coast. If only…

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
