Light, Zesty Grüner, A Big Scoring 2016 Brunello & Its Baby Brother

So, who’s coming to the pub on Monday?

Yes I know it’s pretty unlikely that as father to a four week old baby I’ll be sneaking down the local for a swift half but it’s so nice to be able utter those words. So if, like me, you’ll be having another week of entertaining at home then ensure you have a decent bottle of wine to hand. And if you like something light, fresh and zesty then you may well be interested in trying…

2019 F&F Grüner-Veltliner, Weingut Türk, Austria @ £10.50 a bottle

Grüner-Veltliner is a grape variety native to Austria that has seen a huge rise in popularity in the past 15 years. It usually produces fresh, zesty and aromatic wines for early drinking however some can age splendidly too. I recently received a sample of this modestly priced effort and was very impressed with its quality. Fresh as a daisy with flavours of apple, stone fruit and hints of white pepper spice, this is perfect for a lunchtime glass in the garden. However its clean, minerally zippiness may result in an extra pour or two. It’s available to order now and will be listed on the website from tomorrow. Yum.

2016 Brunello – Don’t Miss The Boat!

The much anticipated 2016 Brunello di Montalcinos are starting to arrive in the UK. If you love Tuscan reds and haven’t yet secured a case or two for your cellar then do not miss the boat of this wonderful vintage. And news just in is that I have just received a small allocation of the brilliant 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from the wonderful producer Castello di Romitorio. This is the first time I have worked with this prestigious estate (that also boast probably the most artistic labels in the region) and it’s very exciting to have access to one of the most consistent high scorers of the vintage. Below are some reviews and scores from the world’s top Italian wine critics. I have a maximum of ten cases of 6 available.

2016 Brunello di Montalcino, Castello Romitiorio @ £250 per 6 IB

“A classic expression of the vintage…this wine nails the sweet spot between elegance and power and that’s not easily achieved.” 95 points – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

“Dark, brooding and geared for the cellar, the Castello Romitoro takes its time opening up in the glass but patience is rewarded as a mix of blackberry and cherry further blossoms adding crushed stone minerality with hints of sage, lavender and violets….The 2016 is full of potential but needs time in the cellar to show its best.” 95 points -Eric Guido, Vinous

Definitely a wine to savour in a few years’ time but if you want something easier on the pocket, quite delicious AND ready to drink then from the same estate we have…

2018 Brio IGT Toscana, Castello Romitorio @ £80 per 6 Inc. VAT

“Luscious and approachable red from Castello Romitorio made with grapes sourced from their vineyards in Scansano, just south of Montalcino. 2018 is yet another superb vintage in Tuscany and this early drinking ‘baby Brunello’ is an excellent introduction to the vintage. Ripe red cherry and plum with grippy tannins and soft spice. It is aged in old oak barrels which gives extra complexity and maturity.” JW

This super value red retails around £15 per bottle but if you pre-order you can save £10 per case.

Both the Romitorio wines should arrive by 26th April and will be available for delivery after that.

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
