Deliciously Mature St. Émilion Grand Cru For Sub £20 – Reaches The Parts Other Clarets Cannot Reach…

…unless you spend a small fortune.

You know you’ve had a good day when your major concern is what bottle of wine to open with dinner and I had been quite fancying a Priorat for most of yesetrday afternoon. However, when arriving home I noticed the sample of 2014 Château Morillon, Saint Émilion Grand Cru sitting on the side that has been sent to me earlier in the week – oh decisions, decisions. Well, I came up with a simple solution, taste the Bordeaux and if it didn’t float my boat, pass it on to a neighbour and open the Priorat. Luckily my neighbours are not on this mailing list so will be none the wiser that they missed out on a wine that was absolutely sensational. I can’t think of when I had so much pleasure from drinking a red Bordeaux, particularly one at this price. I didn’t decant the wine and didn’t use fancy big glasses (admittedly they were fancy small glasses) but the wine just sung from the very beginning to the very end.

It seems that because it doesn’t end with a five or a zero, 2014 is one of those forgotten vintages and thank heavens for that, as with a bit of trawling around you can find some totally delicious wines at a great price – and here’s one of them.

Château Morillon is a St. Emilion Grand Cru and the property sits to the east of Saint Émilion. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc and the wine is fermented in a mixture of concrete and stainless-steel vats. It is then matured for 12 months in 1-2 year old French barrels. That’s the technical bit, now here’s the important bit…

2014 Château Morillon, Saint Émilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux @ £115 Inc VAT per case (6 bottles)

“An absolute belter of a wine and one that wastes no time in letting you know that it’s delicious. This is a wine that you can pull the cork and enjoy immediately – and we all need that sometime. The aromas are just what you want from ‘Right Bank’ Bordeaux – ripe strawberry, fruits of the forest, touch of spice and cigar box – and on the palate it’s equally captivating with plenty of ripe fruit, smooth texture and a silky elegance. However, it’s the finish that really sold me on this as it maintains its gorgeous flavours but then adds a little something extra. Lovely!” Jonny Wren, Songbird Wines

All the best,

Jonny Wren

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
