Beaujolais Nouveau Party At The Westgate Towers

Songbird Wines will be hosting Canterbury’s first Beaujolais Nouveau party for over 20 years at the iconic Westgate Towers on Thursday 16th November – Beaujolais Nouveau Day.

Traditionally held on the third Thursday of November, Beaujolais Nouveau Day is the first day that wine from that year’s vintage can be released and consumed. Its initial UK incarnation was in the early 1970s when MP Clemont Freud and wine merchant Joseph Berkmann (both having their own wine column in the press at the time) challenged each other to a race of who could be first to bring to London and pull the cork on a stash of Beaujolais Nouveau. Within a couple of years the Beaujolais Race was a thing with Beaujolais Breakfasts and other festivities becoming an annual event, particularly in the City of London. Beaujolais Nouveau Day remained popular throughout the 1980s and ‘90s, but revelries tailed off with the turn of the 21st century. However, the rise in the quality and popularity of wine being produced in the Beaujolais region has seen a resurgence of the celebration and an increasing number of parties are again held in cities all over the UK, with Canterbury now joining the fold.

Along with Beaujolais Nouveau we will also taste other reds from the region. To accompany the wine there will be delicious French nibbles, plus some other delights a la Française. Here’s a quick reel on what to expect.

Tickets are £20 per person and available to buy here
