Autumn Offer Wines – Big Savings On Old Favourites

Below are the wines featured in the current Songbird Wines Autumn Offer. It’s a little taster of our Christmas specials, with six hugely popular wines, and we aim to keep them on promotion until the end of the year if stocks last. They will be joined in a couple of weeks by another bunch of wines that will also be discounted. So, get ready to save some pennies!

NV Mayerling Brut Cremant d’Alsace, Cave de Turckheim, Alsace, France            Was £15.50  Now £12.95

Back by popular demand. This superb sparkling was such a success last Christmas that it seemed a no-brainer to feature it again. This is made by the méthode traditionnelle (the same way as Champagne) and offers excellent value. It’s a blend of Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois and has 24 months bottle ageing, 12 months longer than the minimum requirement. This extra time on its lees gives a richness and creamy complexity to the crisp apple flavours. Its soft elegance and lovely zingy finish make this the perfect festive fizz.

2021 Wild House Chenin Blanc, Western Cape, South Africa        Was £8.25 Now £7.25

You get a lot for your money with this at £8.25 but at £7.25 I doubt you’ll find a better white wine anywhere. Made from Chenin Blanc grown on old unirrigated bush vines this is amazingly complex. Yellow and tropical fruit on the nose with Comice pear notes. Crisp acidity with a waxy texture and hints of citrus and lychee. Fresh mandarin tang on the palate with a bright juicy finish.

2020 Illumine Chardonnay, Genetie, Burgundy, France      Was £15.75            Now £11.95

We’re always on the lookout for a ‘Burgundy Bargain’ at this time of year and look what’s fallen in our lap! This is a firm favourite with our white Burgundy lovers so when the winery made us an offer we can’t refuse, we decided to go large. If you decide to go large yourself, then you’ll be handsomely rewarded by paying just £10.95 for orders of 12 bottles which gives you a total saving of £57.60 per dozen. Made from 40-year-old vines in the Maconnais this is fermented in stainless steel with 10% aged in French oak barrels to give it that irresistible toasty nose. Ripe and very approachable with aromas of citrus and stone fruit. The palate has a soft creaminess backed up beautifully with zesty citrus freshness and superb minerality. The finish is long and fine.

2019 Chateau La Garenne, Bordeaux, France            Was £10.95  Now £8.95

Yes, many of you know about this already and have probably tucked into a bottle or two. It’s remaining on offer until we run out which, judging by the initial response, will be long before André Previn graces our screens in the inevitable repeat of the classic 1971 Morecombe & Wise Christmas Special. Charming aromas of dark berry, herbs, tobacco, and a touch of mint. Seductively smooth on the palate with nicely balanced juicy dark fruit and elegant structure. For a wine just three years old, it is wonderfully harmonised and certainly hits all the right notes AND in the right order.

2019 OSA Maremma Rosso, Fattoria Querciarossa, Tuscany, Italy            Was £12.25  Now £10.50

We’ve just wiped out the winery of all their remaining stocks of this vintage as it’s just drinking so well right now. 2019 is already being hailed as a legendary year for all the great names of Tuscany but whilst we wait for them to shake off their tannins, this little beauty is already delivering the goods at a fraction of the price. Ripe, savoury and succulent, this is what Tuscan red is all about.

2020 Domaine des Tourelles Red, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon              Was £12.75           Now £10.75

How I thank Lady Luck for having me sat next to Faouzi Issa, owner of this spectacular Domaine, at a wine trade lunch many years ago. His passion and enthusiasm for wine made me seek them out and they have been a staple of the Songbird portfolio ever since. This, their flagship red, is a terrific blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Syrah, 15% Cinsault and a dash of Carignan. It’s fermented and aged for 8 months in concrete vats. Deep ruby red with fantastically expressive aromas of cherries, cedar wood, rosemary and cloves. A rich savoury palate with lots of Morello cherry and blackberry flavours, some earthy spice and fine tannins. A wine packed with flavour and heritage.

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
