Autumn has been a busy time

Autumn has been a busy time for events kicking off with a Wines of France tasting at The Long Pond micropub in Eltham. Stars of the show included two new additions to the portfolio, 2013 Mas Barrau Cabernet Franc (£7.75) which charmed with its wild ripeness of sweet orange zest scented raspberry and 2012 Domaine La Haute Marone Sablet,  Côtes du Rhone Villages (£12) that had a rich spiciness that lingered on the palate for an eternity.

Old favourites 2014 Les Oliviers Sauvignon Blanc/Vermentino (£6.50) and 2012 Domaine Belles Granges Syrah (£9) also wowed the wine lovers of SE9.

Later that week I was hosting a Spanish night at Chapman’s Seafood Brasserie in Canterbury with a 7 course tapas menu matched with some of my finest Spanish wines. Chef Andy did himself proud with some outstanding fish dishes and out of the four whites tasted the 2014 Rioja Blanco from Bodegas Casa Primicia (£9.50) won a number of fans. It was that winery’s night as their 2012 Rioja Graciano went down a treat with all too.

A week later and it was the Italian themed Supper Club at East Coast Dining Room in Whitstable. Another delicious 5 course menu (another burst button) accompanied by a great selection of wine including the wonderful 2013 Castanzu Vermentino di Sardegna (£7 – a steal!) which is a superb example of what delicious, inexpensive wine this grape variety can make. The two reds that stood out were 2013 Ca di Alte Pinot Nero, Veneto (£8.75) and the wonderful 2013 Barco Reale di Carmignano, Cappezana (£13.50), a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon and one of Tuscany’s best reds under £15 me thinks.

So after all that it’s a month of Ryvita and Green Tea for me…but probably not.

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
