2019 Burgundy En Primeur Offer

2019 is shaping up to be an absolute classic of a vintage in Burgundy, however it was hardly a walk in the park for growers. They had to contend with spring frosts, which reduced yields quite significantly, and some very hot days during August. However, these were counterbalanced with colder nights and the result on the remaining berries was ripe concentration balanced with fresh acidity levels – perfect. Late flowering meant that harvest didn’t begin until September which is perfect for Pinot Noir as it has a preference for its final ripening stage to be in the cooler days of September.

“Outstanding”, “Exceptional”, and “Incomparable” are three words used by three different producers to describe the vintage and 2019 Burgundy has certainly caused a buzz all over the world. What’s appealing to me about this vintage is that it’s not just the ‘big guns’ Grand Crus and Premier Crus that have made exceptional wine but the quality has cascaded down, in a relative manner, to the villages and generic wines. If you are a lover of good Pinot Noir or Chardonnay then I highly recommend you invest in a case or two of something that suits your budget from this vintage. Here’s my pick of great value wines from the vintage –

Whites

2019 Bourgogne Blanc, Domaine Bachelet-Monnot @ £100 per 6 IB – Fresh, vibrant and nutty is the word on this superb value white. A bit of a baby Meursault.

2019 Mâcon Solutré, Domaines Leflaive @ £140 per 6 IB – Domaine Leflaive are the greatest white producer in Burgundy. Their top wine (Grand Cru Chevalier Montrachet) is over £600 a bottle IB and even their Bourgogne Blanc is £45 IB. However they also own vineyards in the Macon and these grapes go through the same bio-dynamic procedure as the ones produced in the hallowed vineyards in the Cote de Beaune so I think this is a bit of a bargain. Very limited stock.

Reds

2019 Bourgogne Rouge, Domaine Bachelet-Monnot @ £110 per 6 IB – Produced from declassified grapes from Marsannay and Hautes Cote de Beaune this is one of the top picks for Bourgogne Rouge this year. Delightful and excellent the Critic Neal Martin said which was high praise indeed for a Bourgogne Rouge.

2019 Maranges 1er Cru La Fussiere, Domaine Bachelet-Monnot @ £135 per 6 IB – One of the savviest buys in the vintage. Demand is high for this highly scored red that offers exceptional value.

2019 Ladoix Les Buis, Domaine Michel Mallard @ £128 per 6 IB – The commune of Ladoix sits just next to the hill of Corton, home of some of Burgundy’s most prestigious vineyards. Domaine Michel Mallard has an excellent reputation as a producer and son Michel Junior is a rising star. He believes the Les Buis vineyard is of premier cru quality.

2019 Savigny les Beaune, Aux Grand Liards, Domaine Simon Bize @ £185 per 6 IB – Always a reliable producer but has surpassed themselves on this offering according to many critics that have tasted. More complex and sophisticated in this vintage.

All wines are offered under bond (excluding duty and VAT) and are subject to availability. Wines will be shipped late 2021.

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
