Songbird Spotlight: Fattoria Querciarossa

The next producer we are featuring as part of our ‘Spotlight On’ series is the superb Fattoria Querciaross. The small winery that is based in the Marrema region of Tuscany is part of the Tenute Toscane portfolio, which is owned by the much-respected Bruna Baroncini and her nephew Samuele. With wineries in prestigious regions like Montalcino and Chianti Classico, it would be easy for a lesser-known region like Maremma to be forgotten but this is obviously not the case when you look at the quality of wine being produced here, especially the much-loved OSA Maremma Rosso, the baby ‘Super Tuscan’ that must be one of the best value red wines available in the UK. For the next two weeks the three wines from the winery will be on offer and we highly recommend you take advantage of the sale whilst you can, as the recent drop in the value of the pound means a price increase is probably not far away!

2021 Fonte del Serpe Vermentino, Querciarossa, Tuscany Was £12.50             Offer Price £11.25

This new vintage of the winery’s flagship white is absolutely gorgeous. The clay and volcanic soil of the region suits the Vermentino grape perfectly and the Mediterranean breeze helps keep the vines cool in the Tuscan heat creating excellent balance. In the winery the wine is fermented and briefly aged in stainless steel tank which helps maintain the freshness. A really delicious Vermentino that offers flavours of citrus, grapefruit and hints of ginger and white pepper. Lovely concentration on the palate with a superb minerally finish.

2019 OSA Maremma Rosso, Fattoria Querciarossa, Tuscany Was £12.25            Offer Price £10.95

If you don’t already know this wine, then this is the time to get acquainted as it’s an outstanding example of the exceptional value you can find in the Maremma region. It’s a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, Cab Sauv and Canaiolo and despite it having no oak ageing shows an astounding level of ripe cherry fruit and spiciness with a savoury finish. Every time I show this at a tasting all present are amazed by its modest price tag which is now event more attractive. Stock up for the winter if you can.

2017 Campo Della Paura Morellino di Scansano Riserva, Querciarossa, Tuscany Was £15.25         Offer Price £13.95

Rich and smooth with silky tannins, close your eyes and you could be drinking Brunello at twice the price! It is a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot. All the grapes are hand harvested and are fermented with the skins under controlled temperature for 5-6 days. It is then aged in French oak for 18-20 months. A pronounced spicy nose of black cherry, raisin, fennel and a hint of pepper. Lusciously rich on the palate with similar flavours but with notes of balsamic on the finish. The tannins are soft and silky and this is bang on for drinking now.

Multibuy deal – Buy 6 bottles of the OSA for £63 per case or 12 bottles for £120 (that’s a huge saving). Special mixed case deal of 6 x OSA, 3 x Morellino and 3 x Vermentino for £130 (save a further £11.30).

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
