2017 Cairanne ‘Les Six’, Domaine Boutinot, Rhône

Full-flavoured and complex but with wonderful freshness and elegance. I love it!” Jonny Wren, Songbird in chief

Here’s an absolutely cracking glass of red from Cairanne, the Southern Rhône’s newest cru. There’s a wonderful balance of power and finesse here with the delicious Grenache grape dominating. The slopes above the village of Cairanne are adorned with treasure troves of well-established vineyards, steeped in the classic terroir of ‘agrilo-calcaire’ (chalky clay) and bristling with parcels of low-yielding old vines, some of very rare and ancient grape varieties. ‘Les Six’ is named after the number of varieties featured in the blend. Some are familiar (Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre) and others less so (Cinsault, Counoise and Carignan Noir) and they are hand-picked and hand-sorted to ensure perfect ripeness. All are fermented in large 6,000 litre oak vats by the natural yeasts present on the grape skins. After fermentation the wine is assembled and matured in large oak casks for 10 months and bottled at the Domaine’s cellars in Cairanne. What arrives in the bottle is a red that can challenge some of the wines produced 15 miles south in the famed appellation of Châteauneuf du Pape.

2017 Cairanne ‘Les Six’, Domaine Boutinot, Rhône @ £12.50 per bottle

“Voluptuous aromas of peppery red and black fruits immediately make the case for this wine’s excellence. These flavours make a welcome return as you sip this vibrant and expressive red. Full-flavoured and complex, but with wonderful freshness and elegance. I love it!” Jonny Wren, Songbird in chief

2021 Quatro Ventos – Portugal’s Top Value Red

Few Countries offer better value around the £10 a bottle mark than Portugal and, in my opinion, one of the very best at this price point is Quatro Ventos from the Douro valley. I remember this wine blowing me away at a Wines of Portugal tasting back in 2019 and then one week later my […]
